What Is Hentai?
Hentai is a genre of anime and manga featuring sexually explicit content. The word is Japanese and literally means "perverse" or "abnormal"; in Japan the material is more often called seijin ("adult"), ero or 18-kin. English speakers adopted "hentai" in the 1990s as fan communities formed online, and it now refers broadly to animated or illustrated pornography of Japanese origin or style. Hentai spans many formats: doujinshi (self-published fan comics), commercial manga, original video animation, visual novels and games. It covers the full range of themes found in other adult media, plus fantastical elements unique to illustration. Japanese law requires published depictions of genitals to be obscured with mosaics or bars, which is why much hentai carries that visual convention, though uncensored versions circulate internationally. The genre has a large global fandom supported by scanlation groups, licensed distributors and streaming platforms. It is distinct from ecchi, which implies suggestive or risque content without explicit depiction.
