What Is a Waifu?
A waifu is a fictional character, usually from anime, manga or video games, to whom a fan feels a strong romantic attachment. The word is a Japanese phonetic rendering of the English "wife," popularized by a scene in the 2000s anime Azumanga Daioh and spread by English-speaking fans on image boards in the late 2000s. Calling a character your waifu can be sincere, playful or ironic depending on context. The male-coded equivalent is "husbando," which keeps an English-style ending because Japanese has no native equivalent form. Waifu culture overlaps with the broader otaku hobby and with merchandise collecting: body pillows (dakimakura), figures and fan art are common ways fans express attachment. Debates over "best girl" in a series, and good-natured arguments that a character is "already taken," are a recurring fandom in-joke. More recently the term has attached to AI companion apps and image generators that let users create or customize an idealized partner. At its core the idea is parasocial affection for a character rather than any single franchise.
