Ecchi is a category of anime and manga that is sexually suggestive but not explicit. The term comes from the Japanese pronunciation of the letter "H" (etchi), itself short for hentai, and in casual Japanese it means "naughty" or "dirty" in a mild sense. In English fan usage, ecchi marks work with frequent fan service - panty shots, revealing outfits, suggestive camera angles, bath scenes and comedic sexual situations - that stops short of depicting intercourse or pornographic nudity. It is common in romantic comedies, harem series and action shows aimed at teenage and young-adult audiences, and titles are usually sold through mainstream retailers rather than adult channels.
